Molds are microscopic fungi that break down organic materials and reproduce by releasing spores. There are more than 100,000 known species of mold. In nature, they play an important role by decomposing leaves, wood, and other plant matter. However, mold becomes a problem when it grows in unwanted places, such as inside your home, where it can damage building materials and belongings. Mold also poses health concerns, especially in people with sensitivity to molds or low immunity. Mold feeds on materials commonly found in
- Wood
- Drywall
- Carpet
- Insulation
- Upholstery
- Paper or cardboard
- Dust and dirt (which often contain organic particles)
Mold enters indoor environments as microscopic spores. These spores require moisture to grow, feed, and decompose materials. Mold can develop on a wide range of surfaces, including wood, ceiling tiles, wallpaper, paint, carpet, drywall, insulation and even clothing. It thrives in areas with damp conditions which may be caused by leaks, high humidity, or flooding.
When mold is disturbed, it releases spores into the air. It is unhealthy to breathe mold spores, touch moldy items, or eat moldy foods.
